Iraq loses more than a quarter of a million dollars a day in air traffic revenue due to the warShafaq News/ The Parliamentary Transportation Committee revealed on Tuesday that Iraq is losing more than $250,000 daily due to the closure of its airspace due to the war between Israel and Iran. The committee called for an official census of the losses and for a complaint to be filed with the United Nations.

Committee member Amer Abdul-Jabbar told Shafaq News Agency, “More than 500 aircraft crossed Iraqi airspace daily before the outbreak of the war between Iran and Israel, and Iraq collected $450 for each aircraft, meaning that monthly revenues were estimated at millions of dollars.”

He added, “There are other revenues that Iraq has lost, including those related to incoming and outgoing flights, tickets, services, and airlines.”

Abdul-Jabbar called on the Ministry of Transport to “count all losses and record them in official lists that will be submitted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a memorandum of protest to the United Nations, demanding compensation for the regional war and the closure of Iraqi airspace.”

Baghdad announced, on May 13, the suspension of all civilian and military flights until further notice, amid fears of an escalation and potential security risks to Iraqi airspace.

Tensions between Israel and Iran have escalated sharply since June 13, 2025, when Israel launched a surprise missile attack targeting sites inside Iranian territory. Tehran responded the same night with a series of intense missile attacks targeting military targets and facilities inside Israel.

These exchanges of attacks have caused dozens of casualties and significant material damage on both sides, sparking widespread international and regional concern, amid warnings that the situation could slide into a broader confrontation that threatens the security and stability of the region.
