Under difficult conditions the fourth section of the submerged tunnel in Al-Faw Port was refloatedShafaq News/ Engineering teams from the General Company for Iraqi Ports began floating the fourth concrete section of the submerged tunnel project at the Grand Faw Port on Wednesday morning, amid difficult weather and environmental conditions. The project is being prepared and transported to its location under the Khor Al-Zubair navigation channel.

The company’s general manager, Farhan Al-Fartousi, told Shafaq News Agency, “Floating the fourth block is a pivotal milestone in the project. The process requires emptying the balance basins inside the concrete block, allowing it to float inside the water basin after removing the sediments and mud from it.”

He added, “After being floated, the piece will be transported to the logistics dock, where it will be technically prepared by installing surveying towers, GPS devices, and the necessary logistics systems to ensure accurate installation in its final location under the navigation channel.”

Al-Fartousi explained that “the installation of this section will contribute to the completion of 693 meters of the tunnel’s length, within the distance extending from the approach to the end of the fourth section, stressing that work is progressing towards achieving clear progress on the ground.”

He explained that “the immersed tunnel is the first project of its kind in the Middle East to be implemented using submerged concrete block technology, and represents a strategic part of the infrastructure of the Grand Faw Port, linking the two banks of the Khor Al Zubair Canal and subsequently forming a vital corridor linking the southern docks to the national road network.”

He pointed out that “the implementation phases face ongoing challenges due to ocean currents, weather fluctuations, and the difficulty of logistical maneuvering, which makes each field phase an engineering achievement that reflects the competence of the Iraqi teams implementing the project.”
