The House of Representatives’ Oil and Natural Resources Committee confirmed on Saturday that the Oil and Gas Law is a complex strategic law, suggesting it will likely be postponed to the next parliamentary session due to ongoing political disputes, particularly between Baghdad and Erbil.
Committee member Bassem Al-Gharibawi told Al-Maalouma News Agency that “the outstanding disagreements regarding the oil and gas law remain a major obstacle to its passage in parliament,” noting that “one of the most prominent reasons for the obstruction is the failure to reach an understanding between the governments in Baghdad and Erbil regarding the management of oil wealth and revenue sharing.”
Al-Gharibawi explained that “the law, if enacted, will contribute to ending the oil dispute between the central government and the region,” noting that “the time remaining in the legislative session is insufficient to finalize the law, which makes it likely to be postponed until the next parliamentary session.”
He stressed that “the committee seeks to prepare the appropriate legal and political groundwork for presenting the law in a consensual form that satisfies all parties, but that requires further dialogue and understanding between the political parties.”
