Former MP Ghaleb Mohammed accused the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) on Friday of concluding oil deals with “fake” American companies in a manner that violates the law and excludes the federal government in Baghdad from its constitutional role.
Mohammed told Al-Maalouma that “the contracts concluded by the KRG do not benefit the Kurdish people, but rather serve the interests of the ruling parties, led by the Barzani family.” He pointed out that “the contracted companies are registered in America but are actually affiliated with Masrour Barzani and work for unjustified high wages.”
He considered that “what is happening is clear blackmail by the region against the central government, in light of the absence of legal or political deterrence from Baghdad,” calling on the federal government to “reject any new agreements signed by the region and halt all illegal contracts that have not passed through the federal court.”
He added that “the caretaker government in the Kurdistan Region does not have the legal authority to sign new contracts, which makes any agreement currently signed unconstitutional and null and void.”
Mohammed called on the regulatory and judicial authorities in Baghdad to “take immediate action to protect Iraq’s wealth and prevent its exploitation by narrow partisan groups in the region.”
