Diyala - Six major Sunni tribes pull the rug out from under the Halbousi and Al-Khanjar alliancesAl-Maalouma/Diyala..
Informed sources revealed on Monday that six of the largest Sunni tribes in Diyala have put the Halbousi and Khanjar alliances in an embarrassing position, after the rug was pulled from them in determining the identity of candidates for the upcoming elections.
The sources told Al-Maalouma, “Six major Sunni tribes in Diyala have decided, in an exceptional situation, to proceed with the option of independently identifying their candidates for the November 2025 elections, away from the veto of the Halbousi and Khanjar alliances. This means withdrawing the exclusive role of these two alliances in selecting figures capable of winning the votes of the tribes.”
They added, “The six tribes have broad social influence in directing the compass of thousands of votes, and their position came after a firm conviction that the two alliances did not fulfill any of the promises previously made regarding reconstruction, services, and compensation, which prompted them to support their sons directly, away from political dictates.”
She pointed out that “this trend represents an important variable in the Sunni political scene in Diyala, and establishes a new phase of tribal decision-making independence in supporting candidates, which greatly weakens the dominance of Halbousi and Khanjar in determining the identity of the October 2025 candidates.”
It is noteworthy that the Sunni street in Diyala is witnessing a state of discontent with the performance of the Halbousi and Khanjar alliances, due to what is described as a failure to fulfill promises on vital issues, in addition to turning some positions into family legacies, far from the standards of competence and experience.
