Ports Authority announces the installation of the third piece of the submerged tunnel - with seven other pieces remainingThe General Company for Iraqi Ports announced significant progress in the implementation of the submerged tunnel within the Grand Faw Port project, represented by the completion of the (seating) process of the third concrete piece, which is one of the most delicate engineering stages in the project, requiring high precision and advanced technical coordination.
“The work on implementing the immersed tunnel within the Grand Faw Port project is witnessing significant progress, as the process of (seating) the third concrete piece of the tunnel has been completed,” the company’s general manager, Farhan Al-Fartousi, said in a statement received by {Euphrates News}. He pointed out that “the third piece was installed in its precise location within the water channel.”
He added, “The seizing process took between (4 to 5) hours, and ended with the piece reaching its correct position and achieving geometric adhesion between it and the second piece, which constituted a pivotal step in linking the underwater tunnel structure.”
Regarding the engineering dimensions of the completed section, he confirmed that “the total length of the immersed tunnel after the third piece was seated amounted to (378) meters, in addition to (189) meters of the approach in Umm Qasr, which is the part directly connected to the aquatic environment, so that the total length implemented under the Khor Al-Zubair Canal to date becomes (567) meters.”
He added that “the height of the water above the third piece after it is placed will reach about (15) meters, which confirms the success of the process in achieving the required design depth according to the precise engineering standards adopted in this type of submerged tunnels.”
