The Parliamentary Transport and Communications Committee confirmed, on Thursday, that Korek Telecom owes the Iraqi state an estimated one billion and a quarter dollars, indicating that the company is evading the settlement and collection of debts and fines owed.
Member of the committee, MP Ghassan Al-Eidani, said in a statement to Al-Maalouma Agency, “Based on the recommendations of the Ministry of Finance, the Council of Ministers has tasked the Parliamentary Transport and Communications Committee with following up on the file of debts and fines owed by Korek Telecom, and working to establish a legal mechanism to collect these amounts.”
Al-Eidani added, “Korek is obligated to pay the accumulated debts, which have amounted to one billion and a quarter dollars, and must fulfill its financial obligations towards the state treasury without any hesitation or attempt to evade.”
Al-Eidani stressed the need for the concerned regulatory and governmental bodies to take action to ensure the recovery of public funds and the protection of the rights of the Iraqi state.
