Independent politician Abbas al-Maliki stressed on Sunday that the dropping of charges that had convicted and dismissed former Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi raises many questions.
Al-Maliki told Al-Maalouma, “Dropping charges and lawsuits against any figure allows them to participate in political, cultural and social activities, thus enabling them to play a political role.”
He added, “The charges that were dropped against al-Halbousi came to open the door for him to once again practice political activity and a political role in the coming period,” noting that “the judiciary had previously convicted him and dropped the charges against him at the present time, and there are question marks about the new information that led to his being declared innocent at the present time.”
He explained that “al-Halbousi had previously attacked the judiciary, and then praised it after the charges for which he was convicted were dropped. Therefore, everyone hopes that the judiciary will distance itself from political conflicts, remain independent and deal according to the presented information.”
