Naseem Abdullah, a member of the Political Bureau of the Iqtidar Movement, confirmed on Sunday that the absence of heads of state from the Arab Summit in Baghdad represents a disappointment for Iraq. He pointed out that the current summit, despite the extensive preparations, did not reach the level of its predecessor in 2012, despite the difficult circumstances during that period.
Abdullah told Al-Maalouma, “The lack of attendance by heads of state at the Arab Summit in Baghdad represents a disappointment for Iraq and a disregard for the current situation, as the government should have taken into consideration the level of representation of the participating countries in the summit.”
He added, “Iraq did not expect Arab diplomatic representation to be this large, especially in the current situation, as the 2012 Baghdad Summit, under Nouri al-Maliki, had a much better level of representation, despite the difficult situation Iraq was experiencing at that time.”
He explained that “the Iraqi government would have been better off not holding the Arab Summit, as long as it realizes that the level of representation at this level, in addition to the summit’s outcomes, did not live up to expectations, especially since its outcomes were constructive and would not have a role in shaping the region’s policy.”
