Representative Haider Al-Salami confirmed on Thursday that an official request has been submitted to extend the current legislative term of the House of Representatives, with the aim of approving a set of important laws that have been postponed.
Al-Salami told Al-Maalouma News Agency, “Dozens of representatives signed an official request to extend the current legislative term of the House of Representatives, in preparation for announcing the schedules of the upcoming sessions, through which a series of pending laws can be resolved through reading and voting.”
Al-Salami added that “many of the laws on the agenda have been delayed due to the lack of a quorum in recent weeks,” stressing “the need to give importance to these laws, given their direct impact on broad segments of society.”
Al-Salami explained that “one of the primary roles of Parliament is to proceed with reading and voting on draft laws, and therefore, extending the legislative term is a top priority, especially since there are many laws awaiting resolution.”
Al-Salami explained that “the law allows the House of Representatives to extend the legislative session for 30 days upon an official request, and this option has already been activated, amid significant interaction from representatives and the collection of additional signatures in support of this approach.”
It is noteworthy that political disputes and lack of consensus among political blocs have disrupted the legal quorum for sessions in recent weeks, leading to delays in voting and the reading of several important laws.
