Issam Shaker, a leader in the Coordination Framework, confirmed on Wednesday that the Khor Abdullah file is a red line, stressing that giving it up represents a direct threat to the Iraqi economy.
Shaker said in an interview with Al-Maalouma, “The Khor Abdullah file represents a serious sovereignty issue, and giving it up means strangling Iraqi ports and shackling the national economy.” He pointed out that “the region is vital and constitutes an important gateway for Iraqi ports to the Gulf.”
He added, “All historical and geographical documents confirm that Khor Abdullah is 100% Iraqi, and relinquishing it is completely unacceptable under any circumstances.” He called on “the political and national forces in Iraq to adopt a unified position to preserve this region and not succumb to external pressures exerted by some countries to push Baghdad towards concessions.”
Shaker indicated that “any pressure exerted on the Iraqi government regarding this file is completely unacceptable, because Khor Abdullah represents an economic and strategic artery that cannot be relinquished.”
It’s worth noting that Khor Abdullah is a vital area that represents Iraq’s frontier overlooking the Arabian Gulf and is a major passageway for its ports in Basra Governorate.
