Independent politician Ali Al-Fatlawi confirmed on Tuesday that there is a significant decline in the legislative role of the Iraqi parliament, especially in light of the escalating corruption files that require a firm legal treatment, whether by representatives or through executive bodies.
Al-Fatlawi said in a statement to Al-Maalouma Agency, that “the current parliament is the worst in the history of legislative work in Iraq,” noting that “the long period of cessation of work and the absence of codified laws, with the exception of what are known as “one-basket laws,” reflect a significant decline in the legislative role.”
He added that “there is a clear procrastination in the work of the Iraqi parliament, which requires a real and comprehensive evaluation of its management of the legislative file.”
Al-Fatlawi indicated that “parliament’s obstruction of its oversight role has directly contributed to the spread of corruption within state institutions,” indicating that there are “extensive corruption files in the investment, industry and trade sectors.”
It is noteworthy that the Iraqi parliament has faltered in passing several important laws, which has sparked widespread public criticism. Observers have cast doubt on its ability to pass these laws within the remaining period of the current parliamentary term, a large portion of which has been taken up by the holidays. They have suggested that these laws will be carried over to the next parliamentary term.
