Shafaq News/ A source close to the leader of the Shiite National Movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, revealed on Monday that al-Sadr has an alternative plan to participate in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
The source told Shafaq News Agency, “Al-Sadr’s decision to boycott the parliamentary elections is not final. There could be a reversal depending on political developments within the country over the next two months. However, Al-Sadr has an idea, which is an alternative plan.”
The source added, “The alternative plan (B) is to participate in the elections indirectly, through a Sadrist electoral list that is not directly supported by him, as happened with the (Sairun) list, which represented the Sadrists without direct and explicit support from Al-Sadr.”
He continued, “This idea is being strongly discussed within Sadr’s circle in Al-Hanana, and the registration of this list may be decided upon at the last minute, before the closing of registration for political entities.”
In March, al-Sadr announced his non-participation in the upcoming elections, citing “corruption and corrupt people,” while stating that Iraq is “living its last breaths .”
In response to a question from one of his supporters about participating in the upcoming Iraqi parliamentary elections, al-Sadr said, “Let everyone know that as long as corruption exists, I will not participate in any lame electoral process that only cares about sectarian and partisan interests, far removed from the suffering of the people and the disasters taking place in the region, the main cause of which is to throw Iraq and its people into incinerators that have nothing to do with it .”
He continued, “I still rely on the obedience of the popular bases of the Sadrist supporters in the Shiite National Movement. Therefore, just as I ordered them to vote, today I forbid them all from voting and running for office, as it constitutes assistance in sin. We will remain lovers of Iraq and will sacrifice our lives for it, and we will not fall short in that at all .”
For months, there have been expectations that al-Sadr would return to the political process by participating in the elections, especially after he called on his supporters to update their electoral records .
It is noteworthy that several sources previously reported that most political blocs, with their various titles and components, sent representatives to Najaf in an attempt to gauge the position of the leader of the Shiite National Movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, regarding his participation in the upcoming parliamentary elections .
In June 2022, al-Sadr decided to withdraw from the political process in Iraq and not participate in any upcoming elections, so as not to associate himself with “corrupt” politicians. This decision followed his call for the resignation of all 73 of his members of parliament.
