The legislative house is still empty of its members, as it has not witnessed regular sessions recently due to some political disagreements and lack of agreement and consensus on laws, and demands from here and there to meet the demands of some representatives, which has led to the sessions not being held, at a time when the country needs Parliament to continue to play its legislative role to pass some laws that affect the lives of citizens and other segments and groups that are still waiting for justice from the legislative authority in passing laws related to the future of some civil and military institutions and bodies.
MP Thanaa Al-Zajrawi told Al-Maalouma, “There is an urgent need for the work and sessions of the House of Representatives to continue in order to legislate laws and work on other projects that are to be passed within the House, as some laws require more time and effort, and therefore such laws require the continuation of parliamentary sessions in order to be completed, decided upon and passed without obstructing the sessions.” She pointed out that “the term of Parliament has not yet ended and there is still enough time to hold sessions and pass laws, which requires all representatives to continue attending the House in order to hold sessions and pass the important laws remaining in the halls of the House.”

On the other hand, member of the Parliamentary Investment Committee, Mohammed Al-Ziyadi, confirmed to Al-Maalouma that “there are fundamental laws that affect the economic and investment reality and require extensive discussions and precise amendments. This cannot be achieved without the continuity of Parliament’s work and the holding of its sessions regularly. The repeated obstruction of sessions contributes to the delay in the enactment of laws awaited by the Iraqi public, especially in the areas of investment and economic development, as the lack of political consensus within Parliament negatively impacts the implementation of these laws.”
In a related development, MP Firas Al-Maslamawi explained to Al-Maalouma that “the inclusion of controversial laws without prior resolution leads to the disruption of Parliament sessions due to the lack of quorum, as a result of the absence of objecting MPs. In addition, the lack of political understanding around some legislation hinders their passage, which negatively impacts legislative performance.” He pointed out that “the Parliament’s presidency is required to conduct prior consultations between political blocs to ensure the smooth passage of laws within Parliament and avoid creating crises that disrupt parliamentary work.”
The House of Representatives continues to struggle to hold regular sessions, despite the selection of a new speaker to move forward with important legislation and laws. However, parliament, especially after the approval of the general amnesty, personal status law, and the return of real estate in one basket, has witnessed a stagnation in holding sessions.
