Iraqi Parliament - People in the Ministry of Electricity Obstructing Solar Energy ProjectShafaq News/ The head of the Electricity and Energy Committee in the Iraqi parliament accused, on Wednesday, unnamed government employees of “obstructing” the implementation of the solar energy project launched by the Central Bank.

Mohammed Abdul Rabbah told Shafaq News Agency that there is a project called the “Central Bank Initiative” that aims to grant loans to citizens through banks to provide solar energy systems.

He added, “There are people within the Ministry of Electricity who are seeking to obstruct the solar energy project for purposes that may be personal, or with the aim of thwarting the project for unknown reasons.”

He continued, “Unfortunately, there are people who are not experts and who are not interested in the future of the country who stand against this project, which aims to improve the energy sector in Iraq.”

Earlier, the Electricity and Energy Committee in the Iraqi Parliament acknowledged the failure of the initiative launched by the Central Bank to support renewable energy projects worth one trillion dinars.

Committee member Kamel Al-Akeili told Shafaq News Agency that the initiative, which was launched three years ago, did not achieve the desired success, as only 250 million dinars were disbursed to ten borrowers.

He pointed out that the initiative failed due to the complex procedures and the lack of cooperation between the Central Bank and banks and financial institutions. He also added that there was supposed to be joint coordination between the Ministry of Electricity, the Central Bank and banks.

The Iraq Green Observatory held the Central Bank responsible for undermining the solar panel project due to the difficult conditions of the initiative, and called for amending its conditions to be more successful.
