MP Mukhtar al-Moussawi confirmed today, Tuesday, that he had collected more than 100 signatures to dismiss Parliament Speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani because he passed the general amnesty law without the approval of 80 percent of the representatives, pointing out that political blocs are seeking to include the convict of the theft of the century, Nour Zuhair, in the amnesty without returning the stolen money.

Al-Moussawi said in an interview with Al-Maalouma Agency, “Al-Mashhadani entered the parliament angry and in a nervous psychological state due to the strong pressure from the political blocs, and within only 5 minutes he hit the hammer and announced that the laws had been voted on, but in reality the vote had not taken place, as he was more enthusiastic than the blocs and 80 percent of the parliament members did not agree,” noting that “more than 100 signatures were collected to dismiss the speaker of the council and what happened was illegal.”

He added, “The announcement of the vote took place during the vote itself, meaning that the process was not completed, and Al-Mashhadani did not care about the members present at all. The sufficient number should have voted and the quorum should have been completed, but he dispensed with all of that,” indicating that “a state of extreme anger is prevailing among the Iraqi street because of the approval of the general amnesty law.”

He pointed out that “there are blocs that wanted to pass the general amnesty law to release some of the corrupt people involved in stealing public money, specifically the convict of stealing tax deposits, Nour Zuhair, because the money he stole is in the possession of these blocs,” explaining that “the paragraph on the financial settlement and returning the stolen money to the state in exchange for amnesty will be politicized like all important issues since 2003 until today.”

It is noteworthy that a number of representatives filed an appeal with the Federal Court during yesterday’s parliament session, which witnessed the enactment of the general amnesty law, and they confirmed that the law did not obtain the necessary legal votes.
