Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Monday his resignation as prime minister and leader of the ruling Liberal Party, ending his more than eight-year tenure.
“It’s time to empower a new generation of leaders to lead the country into the future,” Trudeau said of his decision during a news conference in Ottawa.
“It has been an honour to serve Canadians, but every leader has a time when they must step aside and make way for someone else,” he continued. “I believe it is time for the party and the country to begin a new chapter.”
He stressed that he would remain committed to the issues he championed during his term in office, such as climate change, equality, and human rights.
The resignation announcement came amid a decline in the Liberal Party’s popularity in recent opinion polls, along with mounting political and economic challenges, including rising living costs and divisions within the ruling party. The party also faces a tough battle in the upcoming elections, which has raised speculation about the possibility of a change in leadership to restore voters’ confidence.
Trudeau first took office in 2015, known for his charismatic style and progressive agenda that led the Liberal Party to successive electoral victories, but his tenure was also marred by growing criticism of his domestic and foreign policies.
