The National Nuclear Authority stated today, Thursday, that the writing of the Iraqi nuclear law has reached its final stages, while indicating that Iraq stresses the importance of enhancing international cooperation in the field of optimal use of nuclear technology and its peaceful applications. The Chairman of the National Nuclear, Radiological, Chemical and Biological Regulatory Authority, Fadhel Hawi Mazban, stated, while heading the Iraqi delegation participating in the Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Technology and Applications and the Technical Support Program held at the headquarters of the International Atomic Energy Agency in the Austrian capital, Vienna, that “Iraq’s legitimate right to adopt nuclear options and support development programs in various sectors of health, agriculture, industry, sustainable development and energy production, and the necessity of enhancing cooperation between countries in the field of optimal use of nuclear technology and its peaceful applications in the service of humanity and its support for efforts aimed at achieving international peace and security.”
He stressed “the legitimate right of countries to seek the safe and peaceful use of nuclear technology to enhance their development, economic and health programs and support their future plans to obtain energy from diverse clean sources,” indicating that “the serious and real work of the Iraqi government to achieve this endeavor by joining many previous agreements and other agreements this year, including the Nuclear Safety Agreement, the Joint Agreement on the Safety and Management of Spent Fuel and the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management, in addition to legislating and activating a number of related laws, including the Iraqi Atomic Energy Commission Law of 2016 and the National Nuclear, Radiological, Chemical and Biological Regulatory Authority Law in 2024.”
He pointed out that “Iraq is seeking to complete writing the Iraqi nuclear law, which has reached its final stages, in a manner consistent with the nuclear law system and its four pillars, which are security, safety, guarantees, and civil liability for nuclear damage.”
He pointed out, “The efforts of the Iraqi government to enhance continuous and constructive cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency in the areas of building national capacities in all peaceful applications through technical cooperation programs and projects provided by the International Agency, in addition to training and development opportunities for young cadres and the approval of many national and regional projects.”
He praised “the effective role of technical cooperation projects with the International Atomic Energy Agency to achieve the supreme goal of the peaceful use of atomic energy.”
