Shafaq News/ The spokesman for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Major General Yahya Rasool, confirmed on Wednesday that the Iraqi forces are “on high alert” and ready to defend the country’s sovereignty in the face of any external threat.
The Iraqi Foreign Ministry had previously announced, in a statement, that it had sent official letters to the Security Council, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the Arab League, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, “in response to Israel’s threats to attack Iraq.”
These threats came officially through Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, who sent a letter to the President of the UN Security Council, urging immediate action to confront the activities of armed groups loyal to Iran in Iraq.
Rasool told Shafaq News Agency, “The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, during the National Security Council meeting, issued direct instructions to the Air Defense Command to take all necessary measures to protect Iraq’s airspace and provide all the necessary requirements to enhance the defense of national sovereignty. He also directed the security and intelligence services to collect and analyze information continuously, while submitting detailed reports to the Commander-in-Chief every 12 hours.”
Rasool stressed that the armed forces in all their formations are on high alert and ready to confront any aggression. He said: “Defending Iraq is a legitimate right guaranteed by the constitution and international laws, and the Iraqi government is working hard to repel the danger from the country.”
On the other hand, Major General Rasool confirmed that the Iraqi government supports diplomatic efforts, and that Iraqi diplomacy is working to confront Israeli threats through its participation in an emergency meeting of the Arab League at the delegate level.
Major General Rasool concluded his speech by stressing that Iraq is continuing to enhance its defensive capabilities and ensure its national security, in parallel with diplomatic moves aimed at easing regional tensions.
On November 18, the Israeli newspaper Maariv said: “The security establishment is preparing to deal with the emerging threat after the sharp increase in the number of attacks from Iraq from only 6 drone attacks in August, to 31 attacks in September, and then to 90 attacks in October. Since the beginning of this month (November), more than 65 launches have been recorded.”
Earlier today, the “Hezbollah Brigades in Iraq”, one of the most prominent factions that, within the framework of the Iraqi resistance, adopts its attacks on Israel, announced the continuation of “Operations to Support Gaza” despite the ceasefire in Lebanon that was announced yesterday by US President Joe Biden.
