On Wednesday, a member of the State of Law coalition, Saad Al-Muttalabi, criticized the Iraqi government’s courting of the American side in order to win its favor to win a second term in the file of extending the American presence.

Al-Muttalabi said in a statement to the Maalouma Agency, “The Iraqi government is flirting with the Americans so that it does not object to a second session for the Sudanese,” noting that “the second session is in the hands of the House of Representatives, which in turn represents the voices of the Iraqi street.”

He continued, “The decision to declare a state of emergency and extend it for an additional year, which Biden announced, did not come out of nowhere and was truly in agreement with the Iraqi government,” stressing “the need for the Iraqi street to reveal what the government’s intentions are in this file.”

Al-Muttalabi concluded by saying, “The people must vote in the upcoming elections in order to choose honest representatives who will not break their promises, contrary to what the current government is doing,” pointing out that “the American presence was with the approval of the Iraqi government, and the extension of the stay is also promised by a government agreement.”

Biden announced the extension of the American presence for a full year, amid unparalleled government silence, despite popular and political demands to end the American presence in Iraq.
