The Parliamentary Foreign Ministry calls for the start of procedures to end the work of the United Nations missionThe Parliamentary Foreign Relations Committee called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to begin procedures to end the work of the United Nations mission in Iraq.

Deputy Chairman of the Committee, MP Jabbar Al-Kanani, said in a statement, “We call on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to begin procedures to end the work of the United Nations mission in Iraq, in line with the directions of the Iraqi government.”

A circulated letter issued by the office of Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani, and addressed to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, showed “Iraq’s discomfort” with the United Nations mission’s reliance on the opinions of “other parties” to determine the extent of Iraq’s need for the mission’s work to continue.

Al-Sudani stressed, according to the letter, that Iraq no longer needs the United Nations mission, calling for it to end its work at the end of next year 2025.
