Shafaq News/ The State of Law coalition, led by Nouri al-Maliki, responded on Monday to the call of the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, for his supporters to boycott the provincial council elections in order to reduce their legitimacy internationally and internally, and considered it a “useless” call, since the movement does not represent the entire Shiite component.
The leader of the coalition, Saad Al-Muttalabi, told Shafaq News Agency, “Part of the Shiite component will boycott the governorate council elections, while the rest of the Shiite component will participate, and boycotting part of any component does not affect the legitimacy of the elections internationally or internally, and if the entire Shiite component was boycotting, it would be There is an influence, and the same applies to the Sunni and Kurdish components.”
Al-Muttalabi explained, “The Shiite component will participate in the electoral process as candidates and voters, so there is nothing that will make the elections lose its legitimacy.”
He added, “The Iraqi constitution affirmed that there is no ceiling on the percentage of participants in the elections to determine their legitimacy or not. Therefore, any percentage, even if it is very small, is considered a constitutional and legitimate election, especially since the right to elections is available to everyone and every person has the right to participate in the elections or to boycott them. This is “It is a personal choice that depends on him and of his own free will.”
On Monday, the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, called on his supporters to boycott the provincial council elections, considering that this would reduce their legitimacy externally and internally.
Al-Sadr said in his response to a question from his supporters about participating in the elections, “Your participation with the corrupt saddens me greatly… Your boycott of the elections is something that makes me happy and angers hostility… It reduces the legitimacy of the elections internationally and internally and reduces the dominance of the corrupt and subalterns over our beloved Iraq, may God Almighty protect it from all harm.” And from every corrupt and unjust person.”
