Shafaq News/ On Wednesday, independent MP Hadi al-Salami held the presidency of the Iraqi Parliament responsible for not holding an extraordinary session to discuss the reasons and repercussions of the rise in the dollar exchange rate against the local currency in the country’s markets.
Al-Salami told Shafaq News agency, “Based on Article 28 of the parliament’s bylaws, 82 signatures were collected from members of the parliament to submit a request to the parliament’s presidency to hold an extraordinary session to discuss the reasons for the rise in the exchange rate of the dollar against the Iraqi dinar.”
He added that the deputies are in the parliament awaiting the Presidency’s decision to hold an exception session, given that the issue is related to the interests of the Iraqi people, including the high cost of living, the difficulty of life, and the high prices of foodstuffs and medical medicines.
Al-Salami also indicated that the Presidency of the House of Representatives bears responsibility for not convening a session to discuss the repercussions of the rise in the dollar exchange rate due to its lack of response, despite the passage of 48 hours since the submission of the request.
The parliamentarian demanded the Presidency of the House of Representatives to hold an extraordinary session, host the governor of the Central Bank, and reveal the facts to find out the reasons for the significant rise in the dollar exchange rate.
Dozens of Iraqi parliamentarians signed a request to hold an extraordinary parliamentary session to discuss the high exchange rate of the dollar, according to MP Raed al-Maliki.
And the exchange rate of the dollar continues to rise against the Iraqi dinar since the days of the main stock exchange in the capital, Baghdad, and in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region.
The rise of the dollar in the Iraqi local markets led to an increase in the prices of foodstuffs in the wholesale markets, which are considered the main artery of the citizen’s life.
Yesterday, Tuesday, Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani urged the Iraqi Central Bank to activate steps to sell foreign currency at official rates to the population, with the aim of curbing the rise in the dollar exchange rate against the local currency.
