WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The service has been cut off in most parts of Iraq, including the capital Baghdad, and the connection rate has fallen below 70 percent amid renewed anti-government protests, the Internet monitoring watchdog said on Saturday.
Earlier on Wednesday, social networking sites Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and the WhatsApp messaging app were broken down across Iraq, except for the Kurdistan region, which has a separate Internet infrastructure.
According to the news agency “Reuters”, access to Internet services only through a virtual private network, which effectively hides the location of the device used.
The news comes in conjunction with a wave of protests that began on Tuesday in Baghdad and other cities to protest against corruption, unemployment and poor services.
