Babinaoz (Reuters) – The White House confirmed Tuesday that U.S. President Barack Obama received a request from Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki to intervene to prevent Exxon Mobil from moving forward into an agreement with the Kurdistan region.
was aide to Maliki said earlier that the prime minister warned in a letter to Obama that the deal will have repercussions and consequences on the stability of Iraq.
said Tommy Vietor, a spokesman for the White House, “We have received the letter but will not attach it before we respond to Prime Minister Maliki.”
The U.S. oil giant has angered Baghdad last year when it signed an agreement for exploration with the Regional Government Kurdistan in the north, which the central government says it is against the law. Since the complete withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq in December and areas of conflict between the semi-autonomous Kurdistan and Baghdad, Saddam’s points are possible.
