The United States announced that it was “deeply disappointed” by the referendum on independence held by the Kurdistan region in defiance of the international community as a whole, stressing that the referendum “will increase instability and difficulties” in the region.
“The United States is deeply disappointed by the KRG’s decision to hold a unilateral referendum on independence today, including in areas outside the Kurdistan region,” the State Department said in a statement.
“The historic relationship between the United States and the Kurdish people will not change in light of the non-binding referendum, but we believe that this step will increase instability and difficulties for the Kurdistan region and its people,” the statement said.
According to the statement, the referendum “will significantly complicate relations between the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Iraqi government and neighboring countries.”
The US State Department also noted in its statement that the war against Da’ash “is not over, and extremist organizations seek to exploit instability and conflict.”
“We believe that all parties should engage constructively in dialogue to improve the future of all Iraqis,” she said, stressing that “the United States supports a united, federal, democratic and prosperous Iraq.”
