The US Defense Department denied on Wednesday that Minister James Matisse had asked Kurdistan Regional President Massoud Barzani during their meeting in Erbil to postpone the referendum on the independence of the region scheduled for September 25.
“James Matisse urged Barzani to continue dialogue with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and focus on sustaining the momentum of the war against Da’ash,” the Defense Ministry said in a statement.
He added that “Matisse Park Barzani success of the process of Mosul,” continuing that “the city was liberated only when there was high coordination between Baghdad and Erbil.”
“Defense Secretary James Matisse thanked him for the leadership of the Peshmerga forces and the valuable partnership in the war to eliminate the oppressor.”
