BAGHDAD (Reuters) – Iraqi President Fuad Masum held a meeting with his deputy, Nuri al-Maliki, on the importance of developing ways to prevent a referendum on the secession of the Kurdistan region, the newspaper Okaz said.
The newspaper quoted Iraqi sources as saying that “Maliki asked the infallible to hold several emergency meetings including the Presidency of the Republic and the Prime Minister and the Presidency of the Parliament to discuss ways to prevent a referendum to separate the Kurdistan region and stand against independence from Iraq”
“An emergency meeting will be convened next week with a single agenda that includes ways to face the referendum,” the sources said. “The meeting is to agree on inviting the House of Representatives to an extraordinary session to confirm its previous decision to ban the referendum and announce binding measures under the law and the constitution.”
