the White House said that US President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi discussed during a telephone conversation took place between them on Wednesday the “common concern” over the execution of the Saudi Shi’ite cleric Nimr and attacks on the Saudi Embassy in Iran.
The White House said in a statement that the two leaders “agreed on the need for all parties in the region show restraint and to avoid rhetoric and provocative behavior and avoid exacerbating sectarian tensions.”
