Senior diplomatic source from Washington to give the White House the green light to the President of the Kurdistan region Massoud Barzani to take over as president of the republic instead of Jalal Talabani, who is lying in a German hospital for treatment.
The source said that “the White House took this action despite the rejection of a strong component of the Sunni Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.” He explained that “the Kurdish delegation that visited the United States recently made a number of demands, including the idea of Barzani’s assumption of the presidency of the Republic to surround Maliki through an agreement with Parliament Speaker Osama Najafi, who also sharp disagreement with the Prime Minister.” The source pointed out that “the first action to be taken by Barzani after assuming the presidency is to withdraw confidence from the Maliki before the end of the year to prevent the next parliamentary elections which in the post of prime minister.”
