The Ministry of Electricity finalizes instructions for regulating the connection of solar energy systems to the national gridThe Ministry of Electricity announced on Wednesday the completion of instructions regulating the connection of solar energy systems to the national grid. The ministry indicated that the instructions allow citizens to connect their solar systems to the national grid using smart meters. In a statement, the ministry said, “Within the framework of the Ministry of Electricity’s directions to encourage the use of solar energy, the Council of Ministers decided, in its session yesterday, Tuesday, to eliminate customs duties imposed on solar energy systems imported into Iraq, in support of the move towards renewable energy sources and to reduce the costs of acquiring these systems.”

He also explained that “the decision came after an official proposal submitted by the Minister of Electricity, Ali Saadi Wahib, to the Prime Minister, which included a request to reduce the customs duties imposed on solar energy systems and their components, with the aim of encouraging citizens to acquire them.”

He added that “the Ministry of Electricity, in implementation of the Minister’s directives, has completed the preparation of a draft of instructions to regulate the connection of solar energy systems to the national electricity grid, which includes (40) articles, aimed at regulating the mechanisms of connection and exchange of electrical energy between citizens and the national grid,” noting that “the proposed instructions, after their approval, will allow citizens to connect their solar systems to the national grid using smart meters, which will contribute to reducing the value of electricity bills for citizens according to the quantities of energy exchanged.”

He also indicated that “the Ministry has approached the State Council to complete the legal drafting of the instructions, in preparation for submitting them to the Council of Ministers for consideration and approval in accordance with the proper procedures,” explaining that “these measures come within the efforts of the Ministry of Electricity to promote reliance on renewable energy, and to reduce the loads on the national grid, in a way that supports the stability of the electrical system and improves the efficiency of its use.”
