Economic expert Mohammed Al-Hassani attributed part of the decline in the dollar exchange rate in the parallel market on Sunday to news circulating about the imminent arrival of a new shipment of cash dollars to Iraq, following an agreement to continue the flow of shipments from the United States.

Al-Hassani told Shafaq News Agency that simply talking about the arrival of a new shipment of dollars to Iraq could quickly affect market activity by calming traders’ fears about the availability of dollar liquidity and reducing reserve demand and speculation on foreign currency.

He added that the impact of this news is also related to the size of the shipment and the date of its arrival, indicating that the market may react to expectations before the dollar actually arrives, especially when there is a high need for foreign currency.

Al-Hassani explained that talk of the arrival of new quantities of foreign currency led traders to expect an improvement in the availability of dollars in the market, which contributed to the decline in the exchange rate, noting that the continuation of this decline during the coming period will be linked to the extent to which the new shipment is reflected in the size of the dollar supply.

Government spokesman Haider al-Aboudi had reported that Iraq and the United States had agreed to continue shipments of cash dollars to Iraq, with a new shipment expected to arrive in the coming days, although the value of the anticipated shipment was not specified.

Exchange rates fell in the markets this morning, reaching 155,250 dinars per 100 dollars at the Al-Kifah Exchange in the capital, Baghdad, after having risen during the past few days to more than 160,000 dinars per 100 dollars.
