The Associated Press reported on Saturday that France is preparing a draft resolution at the United Nations Security Council that supports freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and affirms the need to respect international law of the sea, according to a UN diplomat.
The agency quoted the diplomat, who asked not to be identified, as saying that the draft resolution would reaffirm the need to respect freedom of navigation in the strait, which is one of the flashpoints related to the war with Iran, given its importance to global shipping and related food and energy security.
He added that the draft resolution would also stress the need to respect the law of the sea and support peaceful initiatives aimed at ensuring the safe passage of ships through the strait.
The diplomat noted that US President Donald Trump and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron discussed this issue on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meetings this week, and that it was also discussed with a number of Arab countries and with Iran.
These moves come at a time when Washington insists that Iranian forces do not control the Strait of Hormuz, while US forces are deployed around it and have imposed a blockade on Iranian ports.
In response, Tehran presented a new plan to halt the conflict and return to negotiations, which includes a seven-day deadline that could end with the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, where shipping traffic has been almost completely disrupted since the outbreak of war last February.
