The Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee revealed on Thursday the provinces where procedures are underway to fully transfer security responsibilities to the Ministry of Interior this year. The committee indicated that the requirements for this step are now in place, particularly regarding coordination and integration between military units and security agencies.
Committee member, MP Yasser Iskandar Tawtoot, explained to Al-Maalomah that “the positive changes supporting security and stability in the Iraqi security landscape encourage the adoption of new measures and strategies for managing security and maintaining stability.”
He added that “transferring security responsibilities to the Ministry of Interior in the provinces is a strategy that has been in place for years. A series of field steps have been taken to create military integration and enhance coordination among the forces holding the ground, thus creating the appropriate conditions for the Ministry to assume full responsibility for security.”
He indicated that “the governorates of Dhi Qar, Muthanna, Diwaniyah, Najaf, Wasit, and Babylon are ready to assume full security responsibilities from the Ministry of Interior. A series of meetings have been held recently to this end, and these will be followed by practical implementation mechanisms on the ground.”
He emphasized that “this path is crucial for strengthening stability and maintaining control, as well as being an application of a strategy aimed at enhancing civil stability and distributing roles among the various military and security sectors, according to the specific jurisdictions and responsibilities of each entity.”
