The spokesman for the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Mahmoud Mohammed, confirmed on Saturday that his party is conducting “serious and intensive” talks with all political parties in the region to resolve outstanding issues. While he expected the remaining ministerial positions in the federal government to be finalized after the anticipated visit of Prime Minister Ali al-Zubaidi, he stressed the rejection of using Iraqi territory to target neighboring countries.
Mohammed told reporters that “meetings are ongoing between the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and will continue away from the eyes of the media in order to activate the parliament and proceed with forming the new Kurdistan Regional Government,” stressing that the issue of activating the Kurdistan parliament depends on those meetings and the results they reach.
Regarding the completion of the federal government’s cabinet, the Democratic Party spokesman expected that this would happen after al-Zaidi’s anticipated visit to the United States to participate in the work of the United Nations General Assembly.
Regarding the process of disarming Iraqi factions, Mohammed explained that “the Iraqi constitution has settled the issue of restricting weapons to the state exclusively, and we support the full implementation of the constitution in all areas,” stressing the categorical rejection of using Iraqi territory, including the Kurdistan Region, to attack neighboring countries.
Despite the passage of nearly two years since the parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region, the tenth government cabinet remains stuck in place amid ongoing political disputes between the two main parties, the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan.
The Kurdistan Region Parliament elections, held on October 20, 2024, produced a new political reality that redrawn the balance of power within the parliament, but did not give any party a comfortable majority that would allow it to form a government on its own, which made consensus among the main forces a prerequisite for forming the new government cabinet.
According to the final election results, the Democratic Party won 39 seats, while the National Union came in second with 23 seats, while the New Generation Movement made remarkable progress by winning 15 seats.
The Kurdistan Islamic Union won 7 seats, the National Position won 4 seats, and the Kurdistan Justice Group won 3 seats, while the remaining seats were distributed among other political forces and the quota seats for the components.
These results clearly showed that the Democratic Party maintained its position as the largest political force in the region, but it did not obtain the absolute majority that would enable it to form a government on its own, and the National Union remained the second force capable of influencing the power-sharing equation.
