A security source in Basra province reported on Saturday that Iraqi naval forces thwarted a piracy attempt against an oil tanker in territorial waters and arrested those involved in the operation.

The source told Shafaq News Agency that the tanker (MAYSAL-RAYM), which is of the “tanker” type, was subjected to a piracy operation carried out by armed individuals who were on board two boats in the loading and unloading area (STS) opposite the Basra oil port.

He explained that a naval force immediately went to the scene of the incident upon receiving the report, and was able to control the situation and arrest 11 suspects who were on board the two boats used in the attack.

The source indicated that the detainees and the seized items were handed over to the police station in the Al-Faw district to complete the proper investigations with them, identify the parties behind them, and determine the circumstances of the security breach.
