US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that the United States is approaching a “critical turning point” in the Iran war, indicating that a “big decision” is imminent and that large-scale military operations against Iran may have to be resumed.
Trump told Axios that “the decision to eliminate the Iranian regime is a big one and all possibilities are on the table, and I am very satisfied with the naval blockade, and we have prevented Iran from exporting its oil.”
He continued, “I have a fateful decision to make about whether I want to intervene and eliminate the Iranian regime, and the forces in the Middle East are ready for the possibility of all-out war against Iran.”
He added: “I want to know the position of regional allies, and we have been keen to protect them, and I want to use the UN meeting to hear directly from them about the next steps in the war.”
The US president noted that “the Iranians are in direct contact with us and still want to reach an agreement.”
Axios quoted officials as saying that “Trump ordered that current troop levels in the Middle East be maintained until the end of the year in case of a return to fighting.”
The United States and Israel launched strikes on targets inside Iran on February 28, and Tehran responded with counterattacks.
In mid-June, Iran and the United States signed a memorandum to cease hostilities, before the two sides exchanged blows again later.
