Iraqi President Nizar Amidi called on Thursday for diversifying the sources of the economy and income, and attracting investment to the country, stressing the need to cleanse the investment environment of the “scourge of financial and administrative corruption” that is rampant in state institutions and departments.
In his speech at the Sulaimaniyah Economic Summit 2026, President Amidi said that cooperation between government institutions, community institutions, partners and independent organizations is important in formulating, proposing, developing and implementing financial, banking and economic policies for the benefit of a growing and developing economy.
He explained that partnership in proposing policies and developing solutions is of great importance in light of the circumstances the region is going through, making joint action a necessity to overcome regional security problems and avoid their effects on the national economy and the lives of citizens.
The President affirmed his support for efforts that enable the private sector to play a greater role in implementing strategic projects, developing infrastructure and services, and creating job opportunities, while ensuring transparency, competitiveness, and protecting public funds and the rights of the state and investors.
Amidi considered that the success of these partnerships requires the integration of the state’s role with the efficiency of the private sector and its ability to invest and innovate, diversify economic activity, and attract capital, expertise, and technology, leading to a more diversified and competitive economy, indicating that experiences have proven that political and security stability is not complete without sustainable economic and social stability.
The President stressed his work to stabilize the region, promote the principles of dialogue between the parties, preserve national sovereignty, and build a long-term national vision based on the integration of state institutions, the rule of law, good management of resources, diversification of economic sources, investment stimulation, and digital transformation.
He pointed to the importance of the emergence of a gradual transition towards a diversified, productive and attractive economy for investment, through financial and economic reform, infrastructure development, empowering the private sector, investing in youth and technology, and diversifying sources of national income, leading to comprehensive and balanced development.
He believed that continuing to cleanse the financial, economic and service environment from the scourges of corruption constitutes an important and fundamental step in restoring life and creating a safe environment for investment and business operations, while supporting the procedures of the judiciary, integrity and security agencies and relevant government institutions.
