Fuel crisis prompts Iraqi government to review decision to lift subsidies on fuel prices

A member of the parliamentary Oil, Gas and Natural Resources Committee revealed on Thursday that there are moves to address the country’s fuel crisis, with the Cabinet reviewing its recent decisions regarding lifting subsidies on prices.
Committee member MP Mohammed Al-Nuaimi told Shafaq News Agency that a delegation from the committee visited the Oil Products Distribution Company to discuss the “gasoline and kerosene crisis,” noting that the Ministry of Oil and the company are working intensively to address the crisis.
Al-Nuaimi added that the recent Cabinet decisions regarding lifting subsidies on fuel prices have caused a new crisis.
He revealed that the Cabinet is currently reviewing its recent decisions regarding lifting subsidies on fuel prices for some sectors, while emphasizing that the crisis is “on its way to being resolved.”
The Cabinet, headed by Ali al-Zidi, had decided to lift subsidies on the prices of petroleum products for all sectors except (gasoline, gas oil, kerosene, and liquefied gas supplied to citizens), starting from September 1st.
The Iraqi Oil Products Distribution Company confirmed that the increase in oil product prices is specific to government departments and other sectors and does not include oil products supplied to citizens, which remain at their subsidized and well-known prices.
