On Wednesday, Mukhtar al-Moussawi, a member of the parliamentary Security and Defense Committee, revealed that there was a strict American directive imposed on Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi to prevent Iraq from concluding any arms contracts with Russia and China, indicating that Iraqi moves have become limited to specific alternatives under American supervision.
Al-Moussawi told Al-Maalouma News Agency that “the US administration gave a direct order to Al-Zaidi during his recent visit to Washington, stipulating that he should not approach Moscow and Beijing regarding arms deals, while Washington might allow Iraq to obtain air defense systems exclusively from France, as they do not conflict with US interests.”
He added that “the issue of diversifying the sources of weapons for the Iraqi army and equipping it with modern and advanced systems, especially in the area of air defense to protect the country’s airspace, is met with a continuous American veto and pressure.”
He stressed that “breaking free from these American restrictions and constraints imposed on the Iraqi military file requires a unified national political will.”
