Iranian hardline cleric Mohammad Baqer Kharrazi sparked widespread controversy after calling on his supporters to form groups to take to the streets and violently confront unveiled women, prompting the Iranian judiciary to summon him.
In one of the recordings, Kharrazi, the Secretary-General of “Hezbollah Iran,” called for the formation of a group of 50,000 people in Tehran to issue strong warnings to unveiled women, and then went so far as to call for their killing if they refused, describing this as a “fatwa.”
In another recording, he called for gathering 530 people from each Iranian city, up to about 250,000 people, and heading to Tehran to occupy the streets, claiming that the army would not be able to confront a crowd of this size.
The remarks came after Kharrazi had previously stirred controversy by talking about the possibility of President Masoud Pezeshkian’s resignation, claims which the Iranian Supreme Leader’s office quickly denied. He also called for a nuclear bomb to be detonated in the Atlantic Ocean to cause tsunamis toward America.
The judicial authorities later announced that Kharrazi was being prosecuted and summoned to appear before the Special Court for Clerics to consider his statements.
