US President Donald Trump said that an agreement on the Strait of Hormuz could be reached as early as Wednesday or Thursday.
According to the Associated Press, journalists accompanying Trump in California asked the US president about a report published on the Axios news website stating that an announcement regarding the Strait of Hormuz might be issued on Wednesday.
Speaking Tuesday evening California time (Wednesday morning in the Middle East), Trump said: “It could happen. Tomorrow or the next day. A lot of progress has been made.”
This comes as Iran and Oman move step by step closer to an agreement to reopen the vital waterway and potentially help end the war.
Two regional officials told the Associated Press that the potential agreement emerging from talks between Iran and Oman stipulates that ships enter the Arabian Gulf via a route controlled by Iran and exit via a route controlled by Oman.
The officials added that service fees will be imposed in exchange for providing security and preserving the marine environment.
The two officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss these sensitive negotiations.
The Trump administration had previously ruled out any agreement that would give Iran control of the strait, which was an open international waterway before the United States and Israel attacked Iran on February 28.
About one-fifth of the world’s oil and natural gas used to pass through the strait, but shipping through the waterway has declined significantly due to Iranian attacks since the start of the war.
In a conversation with reporters last Monday, the US president reiterated his public opposition to imposing any tariffs in the strait, saying: “I will not allow them to impose tariffs. If anybody is going to impose tariffs, we will be the ones to impose them.”
Regional officials said negotiations were still ongoing and that a final agreement could take a different form, with any agreement linked to the lifting of the US embargo on Iranian ports.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei said on Tuesday that Tehran’s talks with Oman focused on “establishing safe shipping corridors for entry and exit,” routes that “preserve sovereign rights while taking into account national security considerations for both Iran and Oman.”
