Reuters reported on Tuesday that Oman had submitted a proposal to Iran regarding a joint regional mechanism for managing the Strait of Hormuz with voluntary fees.
The agency quoted a Gulf source as saying that Iran “will not exercise unilateral control over the vital waterway, according to the Omani proposal which enjoys regional support.”
According to Reuters, the proposal is based on the “Strait of Malacca” model, where users of the strait voluntarily contribute to funding navigation services, environmental protection, and search and rescue operations.
