Exclusive: 40 prominent Iraqi political figures face anti-corruption scrutiny

A government source revealed on Wednesday that the procedures for collecting evidence and documents related to corruption cases in which more than 40 prominent political and governmental figures are suspected of being involved are nearing completion, in preparation for taking legal action against them.
The source told Shafaq News Agency that “the government is continuing its procedures within the framework of combating corruption, including pursuing those involved and referring them to the judiciary, in addition to working to recover public funds.”
He pointed out that “anyone found guilty before the judiciary will be tried in accordance with the law, and the trials will be conducted publicly, reflecting the transparency of the procedures followed in pursuing corruption cases and revealing those involved in them.”
A wave of arrests was launched at dawn on Sunday (June 28), targeting political officials, members of parliament, and businessmen as part of an anti-corruption campaign, which Al-Zaydi described, during a cabinet session, as the “first phase” of broader measures to recover public funds, while tasking oversight bodies with receiving any indications related to cases of corruption or negligence in state institutions.
An informed government source previously revealed to Shafaq News Agency that investigations are still ongoing with those detained in the “Dawn Charge” operation, amid strict measures that included preventing visits and external communication, in order to maintain the confidentiality of the investigations.
Informed government sources had previously revealed to Shafaq News Agency that the legal procedures for the second phase of the campaign to pursue those involved in corruption cases, which includes files in the Ministries of Health, Oil and Electricity, have been completed. This phase involves tracking funds, real estate and investment projects belonging to officials in the United States, Europe and Turkey, in conjunction with preparing a new list of names of accused persons, as well as studying the draft law “Where did you get this from?” in preparation for completing its legislative course.
The Federal Integrity Commission stated that the arrest warrants are being carried out in accordance with the law and under the supervision of the judiciary. According to judicial sources, the investigation data indicates that new files will continue to be opened that may affect other figures in the coming period, as part of efforts to recover public funds and prosecute those involved inside and outside Iraq.
It is worth noting that Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi had earlier this month called on Iraqis to report corruption, and directed that generous financial rewards be given to informants.
