Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi confirmed on Tuesday that the phase following the end of the international coalition’s mission in Iraq at the end of September will witness a complete reliance on Iraqi security capabilities.
Al-Zaidi said during a joint press conference with US President Donald Trump that “Iraqi security forces are now capable of protecting the country,” stressing that the state has received “quantities of weapons from some factions.”
He added that “the government will continue to restrict weapons to the state,” indicating that “the government will cooperate with parties that choose to engage in political work.”
Al-Zaydi pointed out that “Iraq’s losses due to terrorism have exceeded $400 billion, and we have a plan to return the remaining displaced people to their homes,” noting “working with the United States of America to strengthen economic cooperation.”
The Iraqi Prime Minister explained: “We came to Washington to talk about the future of the relationship with the United States.”
Regarding the relationship with the Kurdistan Region, Al-Zaydi said: “I cannot cut off a part of my body,” noting that “the Kurdistan Region is an important part of Iraq.”
Al-Zaidi arrived in the US capital, Washington, on Monday, at the head of a high-level delegation that included a number of ministers, officials, investors and business owners, for an official visit that will last for seven days.
