Independent politician Didar Haval revealed on Sunday that the ownership of oil refineries in Erbil by the Masoud Barzani family has paved the way for a resurgence in oil smuggling to Turkey, Afghanistan, and Syria, taking advantage of the lack of oversight from the Baghdad government.
Haval told the Information Agency, “The oil refineries, including Kar and Lanaz, one belonging to Mansour Barzani and the other Kar to a leader in the Barzani party, have facilitated the smuggling of petroleum products from the region to Turkey, Syria, and Afghanistan, paving the way for smuggling networks to conduct business deals with the Barzani family to smuggle oil out of the country without the knowledge of the Baghdad government.”
He added, “The Barzani government has transformed government-owned fuel stations into commercial ones, reaping enormous profits estimated at billions of dinars, amidst the silence of the federal government.” He further stated that “the Ali al-Zaidi government is obligated to disclose the corruption files related to fuel stations in the region, the oil refineries owned by the ruling family, and the smuggling and tax networks.”
He added that “the outgoing government of Mohammed Shia al-Sudani gave Barzani the green light to steal and manipulate the region’s resources.”
