MP Miqdad al-Khafaji, from the Rights Movement, revealed today, Sunday, that Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi deliberately exceeded constitutional powers and signed “secret” agreements with the American side, stipulating that Washington’s strategic reserves be compensated with about half a million barrels of Iraqi oil per day, without returning to the House of Representatives.
Al-Khafaji told Al-Maalouma that “Al-Zidi’s resorting to concluding such sensitive agreements on the sidelines of his visit to Washington, away from parliamentary cover, is a clear violation,” stressing that “any agreement with the American side lacks legal legitimacy unless it is presented to the people’s representatives for a vote.”
He added that “the leaked clauses of the agreements are a major disaster,” revealing that they “include an Iraqi commitment to compensate the United States’ strategic oil reserves with 500,000 barrels per day, with indications that this number could jump to two million barrels per day.”
Al-Khafaji pointed out that “Iraq is indirectly paying today the costs of the Zionist-American war being waged against the Islamic Republic to Washington from the sustenance of its people,” while expressing surprise at the blatant contradiction between mortgaging the country’s wealth to America and the grinding crises that the Iraqi interior is experiencing, from a chronic economic deficit, the cessation of government appointments, and the spread of unemployment among hundreds of thousands of young people.
The MP from the Rights Movement questioned “the usefulness of the economic partnership with Washington, especially since the United States has not provided anything to Iraq,” explaining that “Iraqi oil revenues are still tied up and deposited in the US Federal Reserve Bank, which deprives Baghdad of its full financial sovereignty.”
Al-Khafaji called for “a serious and purposeful stand from the Prime Minister, the government and parliament to liberate the Iraqi economy from American hegemony,” criticizing what he described as “the lack of sufficient courage in the political will for a comprehensive shift towards the promising Asian markets in China and India, and to break free from what he called the American economic occupation.”
He added, “There is a broad parliamentary movement on the horizon, with a unified official statement expected soon from a number of members of parliament in general, and from the Rights Movement in particular, to define a firm parliamentary stance to curb American expansion in Iraq’s economic decisions.”
