Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zubaidi revealed on Sunday that his upcoming talks with US President Donald Trump will focus on strengthening the partnership between Baghdad and Washington, attracting US investments to Iraq, developing security and economic cooperation, and expanding the Strategic Framework Agreement.
In an article published in the Washington Post entitled “Why I’m Going to Washington,” Al-Zaidi said he would travel to Washington this week, where he would present Trump with “practical ways” to elevate bilateral relations from crisis management to creating opportunities, particularly in the economic sphere.
He explained that the talks will focus on encouraging American companies to invest in Iraqi infrastructure, and the energy, manufacturing, technology and digital economy sectors, stressing that his government is proceeding with reforms aimed at providing an attractive investment environment and enhancing confidence in the Iraqi economy.
He added that the meeting will also discuss ways to strengthen the Strategic Framework Agreement, expand cooperation in the areas of education, training and technology transfer, as well as continue to develop Iraqi security capabilities.
Al-Zaydi stressed that the end of the coalition forces’ mission in Iraq on September 30 would mark the beginning of a new phase of partnership with the United States, noting that Iraq seeks to consolidate regional stability and open up to the global economic and financial system.
Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi is scheduled to head to the US capital, Washington, on Monday, at the head of a high-level delegation, in a visit that Baghdad has confirmed is of great importance, especially as it comes at a delicate regional time.
