Exclusive: Iraq records 50 earthquakes in one month

Ali Abdul Khaliq, director of the Seismic Monitoring Department at the General Authority for Meteorology and Seismic Monitoring, revealed on Sunday that 50 earthquakes were recorded in Iraq and neighboring regions during the month of June, stressing that no human losses were recorded.
Abdul Khaliq told Shafaq News Agency that “the Iraqi seismic monitoring network recorded a total of 50 earthquakes during June 2026, including 22 earthquakes inside Iraq and 28 earthquakes outside the country near the Iraqi borders.”
He added that “the tremors recorded outside Iraq were distributed as follows: 16 tremors inside Iran in the provinces of Ilam, Lorestan, Kermanshah, Kurdistan and Azerbaijan, 10 tremors inside Turkey in the provinces of Van, Sirnak and Hakkari, as well as two tremors inside the Syrian province of Hasakah.”
He explained that “the strength of the tremors ranged between one and 4.4 degrees on the Richter scale, while their depths ranged between 6 and 31 kilometers.”
Abdul Khaliq pointed out that “Diyala Governorate, especially Khanaqin District, recorded the highest seismic activity in Iraq with four tremors, followed by the Kalar and Sharabazher areas in Sulaymaniyah, and Daquq District in Kirkuk with three tremors each.”
He confirmed that “the report did not record any human losses resulting from seismic activity during the month of June, and only one real-time report was issued on the tremors recorded during the month.”
