Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi announced on Saturday that the government is ready to provide all necessary facilities to support the return of Christian families to the country, stressing that they are included in the project of one million residential plots.
This came during his reception in Baghdad of the Patriarch of the Chaldean Church in Iraq and the world, His Beatitude Patriarch Mar Paul III Nona, and the delegation accompanying him, which included the Archbishop of the Chaldean Archdiocese of Erbil, Bishop Bashar Matti Warda, and a number of Christian clergymen.
During the meeting, Al-Zaydi stressed that Iraq’s strength lies in its national, religious and cultural diversity, and in the unity, integration and social cohesion of its people, emphasizing that Christians represent an active component and an essential partner in building the state and shaping Iraq’s history and future.
The Prime Minister stated that the return of Christians who were forced to leave the country due to the difficult circumstances that Iraq went through previously is a national and governmental priority, noting that the government is continuing to consolidate stability and everything that guarantees security and sustainable civil peace, and that diversity in the country is a source of strength for society and the state.
Al-Zaydi called on Iraqi Christian businessmen and investors abroad to return and contribute to the reconstruction process, and to take advantage of the investment opportunities available in various development sectors, especially in the health and education sectors, pledging to provide various forms of support to make their projects a success and enhance their contribution to economic development and job creation.
For his part, Patriarch Mar Paul III Nona expressed his deep appreciation for the government’s attention and support for Christian families and businesspeople, emphasizing that these measures and stances send an important message that will encourage expatriates to return to their homeland and strengthen their confidence in their future in Iraq. He also expressed the readiness of Christian businesspeople to actively contribute to the implementation of investment projects and participate in the reconstruction and development process in a way that serves the country and all its citizens.
